Design Basics: Always carry a notebook
Design Tips
July 18, 2022
In the age of smartphones, tablets, and voice notes, carrying an actual notebook might seem a little… old school. But for designers and creatives, it’s still one of the best tools out there.
Why? Because inspiration doesn’t wait for the perfect moment — and it definitely doesn’t care if your phone battery is at 2%.
Ideas Don’t Schedule Appointments
Great design starts with a great idea — and ideas have a funny way of showing up at the most random times. Maybe it’s a sketch for a new logo, a clever tagline, or a product packaging concept you see in a store aisle. If you don’t capture it right away, it’s gone. A notebook is your safety net.
Notebooks Invite Creativity
There’s something about putting pen to paper that’s different from typing. It’s messier, yes. But it’s also freer. There’s no delete key, no notifications, no autocorrect. Just you, your thoughts, and some blank space. That space can spark ideas you didn’t even know you had.
It’s Not Just for Designers
Even if you’re not sketching logos or mapping out branding strategies, a notebook is still useful. Jot down customer feedback, list out promo product ideas, or record moments of inspiration you might want to revisit later. You never know when those thoughts will turn into your next big move.
It’s a Simple Habit — But a Powerful One
At Stargate Design, we’ve seen how tiny habits like carrying a notebook can lead to breakthrough ideas — ideas that turn into smart, memorable designs. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just someone who wants to stay inspired, don’t underestimate the power of pen and paper.
Design begins the moment inspiration strikes. Make sure you’re ready.
